Our Story

The idea for SmarterD was born not in a boardroom or incubator, but on the front lines of enterprise IT.

Years ago, Vijay Sundar—our founder and CTO—was serving as an IT executive at BJ’s Wholesale Club. Like many leaders in large organizations, he was caught between two critical teams: IT and Security. Despite both groups working toward a shared goal of protecting the business, they operated in silos—systems didn’t talk to each other, manual processes and workflows were prevalent, asset inventories were incomplete, and critical data was fragmented across departments. To address these challenges, one of the strategic consulting firms was brought in with the goal of connecting the dots across disconnected data to deliver strategic insights. But like many organizations, this became an annual ritual—an expensive, time-consuming initiative aimed more at mitigating risk than building a lasting, integrated solution.
Vijay envisioned a platform that could break down these silos—connecting IT and Security data through a unified, real-time view. Not just a tool to collect information, but a system to activate it: transforming raw data into actionable insights. He saw the opportunity to go beyond traditional GRC tools and build something far more powerful—a data convergence platform that empowers IT and Security leaders to make data-driven decisions aligned with their organization’s strategic objectives.
During this time, Vijay was introduced—through a board member who was an executive at IBM—to the CTO of IBM. He sought insights on how to approach the challenge of unifying IT and Security data for strategic decision-making. What he learned was revealing: IBM had already attempted this journey. They had invested over five years building a metamodel intended to represent the datasets required to solve this very problem. But despite the time, talent, and resources poured into it, the initiative was ultimately abandoned. The reasons were clear—too much complexity, too many disconnected systems, and too much risk. It was a sobering validation that even the world’s largest tech players had struggled to make sense of siloed enterprise data.
But where others saw a dead end, Vijay saw a turning point.He realized the answer wasn't a massive, monolithic model or a one-time integration effort—it was a convergence layer. Something nimble yet intelligent, built not to replace but to connect, augment, and govern.Fueled by conviction and a relentless belief that better was possible, he kept going. He eventually left BJ’s to pursue his vision full time. What followed were years of grit, iteration, and hands-on engineering, all driven by one simple idea: that organizations shouldn’t have to choose between security and agility, or compliance and innovation.That vision became SmarterD—an AI driven platform purpose-built to connect IT and Security, automate intelligence, and simplify connecting risk, compliance and strategy in a modern, scalable way.
